Must See in Iceland
BlogIceland is one of the world’s youngest, most volcanically active countries and a place where geological marvels are everywhere. The landscapes straddle two active tectonic plates, creating fields of porous black rock, subterranean caves with walls made of lava, and glaciers looming over mysterious black sand beaches.
One of the most spectacular landscapes in Iceland is Vatnajokull Glacier, Europe’s largest ice cap, and it’s possible to visit it on many of the tours and activities in this region. Other highlights include hiking trails like the Fimmvorduhals Pass, hot springs like Laugarfell in Stodvarfjordur, and the village of Seydisfjordur with its rainbow path leading to its church.
Beyond the Ordinary: Exploring the Can’t-Miss Wonders and Must-See Sites in Iceland
Another must see in Iceland is Studlagil Canyon, a majestic canyon carved out of basalt columns and lined with an emerald river. This gorgeous canyon is so beautiful that it inspired the design for the Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik, as well as the movie Game of Thrones. Getting here is simple, but you must be careful because it’s become so popular that the walking paths are now closed to protect the area from too much foot traffic.
Other top sights include the awe-inspiring waterfall Godafoss, whose thin stream of water cascades over black volcanic basalt columns; and the iconic Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall where you can walk behind it. And don’t forget to see the awe-inspiring Northern Lights, shimmering green, purple and red ribbons across the dark sky on a clear winter night. It’s best to follow forecasts and stay away from light pollution, but you can also join a tour to up your chances of spotting them.
